Oh yes, there’s been some changes afoot,
my friends.
The big news is that after more than three
years, Kenton has packed it in as drummer of
Submission Hold. Although we’re beginning
to feel like
Spinal Tap around here, it was great to have
had the opportunity to play and write with Kenton
and we’re all glad we were able to document
our
time together on at least one recording. We
remaining SubHolders would like to take this
opportunity to say thanks to Kenton for being
such a
big part of our lives for the past few years
and to wish him luck in all he does in the future.
Look for K-Dog performing soon at a jazz festival
near you.
The western Canadian tour dates are up on the
tours page, and these, plus one Vancouver gig
alongside Norman
Nawrocki, will be the last Submission Hold
shows for a while, at least a year. But fear
not, good people of cyberland, we have already
started planning our return... next year we’ve
been asked to do some sort of collaboration
with New Music Vancouver, more info much later.
Our friend, jazz drummer and composer, Ben Wilson
will be joining us on drums and electronics
for the tour, should be fun. You may remember
Ben from such improvisational and noise outfits
such as Hospital and Broken Record Chamber.
Sorry to all our European friends, but we’ve
had to put the brakes on the Euro tour as well.
Here’s an advanced shout out to our ever
suffering “road crew”, Mark “Professor@”
Vermin and first time tour nannie, Rachael.
Thank you, fine
Calgarians, thank you.
It’s been a tough couple months, what
can I say? If you’re anywhere between
Vancouver and Winnipeg in May, come say hi.
Best regards,
The Hold

Hello, good people of the internet.
Here is what’s up with the Submission
Hold band. Three shows in March...
one is a benefit for the Vancouver DIY Collective,
check them out here <http://vancouverdiy.org/>.
One show will be our first time across the
Canadian Rockies in five years or so. We’re
playing in Calgary at a benefit for the Haymarket
Cafe Worker Owned Cooperative, check them out
here <http://haymarketcafe.org/>
and check out info on the show here <http://albertapunk.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3778>.
We’re really
looking forward to our trip into the heart of
Canadian conservative nutbarism, it’s
been so long... Details for these shows are
up on the “tour dates” page.
“What Holds Back the Elephant”
will be released in Europe any day now on Stonehenge
Records <http://www.stonehengerecords.com/>,
and if all goes according to plan we’ll
be in Europe for a few weeks in the summer.
We’re just starting to book a little
tour that will take us to Winnipeg and back.
This will happen in May, details soonish.
Street hockey is better than the NHL anyway.
With fondest regards,
The Hold

Hey there. Check it out, Jen's in a book!
http://www.softskull.com/detailedbook.php?isbn=1-932360-64-6
And speaking of Jen, when we were on our
little West Coast tour, she sliced her finger
open whilst making Sam a sandwich at a rest
stop. She hit an artery (gush, gush...[that
was the sound of squirting blood.]) and
got five stitches. We weren't even late
for the show! And speaking of tour, it was
great to see everyone again and our extra
thanks goes out to the following... Jay
Sharks for his first ever bout of tour nannying,
Mark Vermin for piloting the boat, Amber
and Eric, Jess and Alex, Michael and another
Eric; for special help in their respective
towns. And thanks to everyone who came out
to the record release show. Che:Chapter
127 and Mecca Normal in particular.
Hurray! Everyone's great! Except for the
fucking idiot Texan megalomaniac, of course.
But i digress...

Hello and welcome to our new website, brought
to you by our friend Matt.
Thanks Matt! The new record, our first in
four years, is out now on G7
Welcoming Committee Records. It's called
"What Holds Back the Elphant".
Dig it. We're doing a little tour from November
9th-14th and a record release show in Vancouver
on November 26th. There's talk of a European
tour in May and Canadian tour in July. Details
to come... And speaking of Europe, the new
record will soon be released in France by
Stonehenge Records. That's all for now,
friends. Enjoy the new website, let us know
what you think.

A little something for you. Our new record
will be released on November 9th, courtesy
of the fine folks at G7
Welcoming Committee Records. There's
8 or 9 songs and it's called "What
Holds Back the Elephant". Our best
yet, if you want my non-biased opinion.
It'll be released in Europe by the wonderful
Stonehenge Records. We're going on a little
mini-tour of the west coast from November
9th-14th, dates are up on the tours page.
There's a record release show in the works
for November 20th in Vancouver. Rumour has
it that the venerable Kirsten Elliott will
be in town. More info on this as we get
things confirmed. Oh, and the Spartacus
Books benefit rocked, something like $1500
raised for the collective. By the way, that
age restricted bar show that we did, in
my humble opinion, was pretty sucky.

Hello there. Here’s what’s new
with us.
Two gigs at the end of April / beginning
of May. The April 30th show will be our
first ever non-all-ages gig. Hmmm... why
is that? An experiment more than anything,
we suppose. It seems as though in our attempt
to include everyone at our shows, we’ve
ironically excluded half our audience. We
shall see. DIY purists may now begin hurling
abuse.
We’re going on a short west coast
tour from June 6th-13th. Six shows for Submission
Hold and two for The Din. All the dates
are up on the “upcoming shows and
tours” page.
We still haven’t got that new album
out yet. Supposedly we should have it recorded
either just before the tour or shortly thereafter.
The new record won’t be on Ebullition,
like the last two were but rather will come
out on a different label, closer to home
this time.
The interview with Andy and some other folks
talking about touring with their kids can
be found on the “reviews, interviews,
etc” page. This interview was originally
printed in Maximumrocknroll with a great
photo of Sam in the back of the van.
Big thanks to Olivia for website doings.
Is that all? Yes.

As you may already know this website has
a new simpler address, it's www.submissionhold.org
and we have a new mailing address as well...P.O.
Box 21533-1424 Commercial Dr., Vancouver,
B.C., V5L 5G2, Canada.
Thanks goes out to Jim at www.nomediakings.org
and our pal Morag for help re-vamping the
site.
We'll be on the east coast of the U.S. from
September 13th-October 4th. Check the Tour
Dates page for details. This will be Sam
Danger's third time on the road with us
and he'll have just turned two! Check out
the interview with Andy and some other folks
in the September issue of Maximumrocknroll,
it's all about touring with your kids. Maybe
we can get it up on the never before used
Interviews page?
Hopefully the re-press of the "Eat
More Garlic" CD will be ready for tour.
This is a collection of our first two demo
tapes and it was origionally released in
Argentina as a benefit for the Anarchist
Black Cross, an anarchist prisoners support
group. This time the proceeds of the disc
will go to Chain Reaction, a community group
in Washington D.C. that teaches inner city
kids about bicycle mechanics and sustainable
transportation. The CD will be released
by the D.C. label Amor y Lucha.
We've got a pile of new songs ready and
hopefully we'll be able to get them recorded
some time before the end of the year. Lately
it's been almost impossible to get us all
in the same place at the same time for more
than a couple days at a time.
Andy brought back to life, with the help
of Stephe, his long, lost side project Bus
Graveyard. Bus Graveyard, like the Din,
is improvised music and noise but with prose/spoken
word/readings. We are taking our pretentiousness
to a whole new level.
If you missed it, we played our 10th anniversary
show on July 1st,2003. Our friends 1905,
from Washington, DC were on the bill and
Jen made birthday cake.
That's all for now. If you're in the eastern
U.S., come say hi and bring Sam a birthday
present. Big thanks go out to Brian, Morag
and Jim for their recent efforts to help
the Hold.
George Bush, what a fucking moron.

This update is on the eve our our European
tour. European dates are on the Upcoming
Shows page. A more reliable list of dates
can also be found at www.tcwtga.org the
site of The Company With The Golden Arm.
The west coast tour was a blast. RIP Antiproduct.
A thousand thanks to everyone who set up
shows, housed and fed us. Hopefully we wil
see you again soon.

2001 was a year of big changes for the Hold.
The biggest of those changes came on Sept
1st when Jen and Andy's son, Samwise Danger
Thorpe was born. He came into the world
at the end of a dark and stormy night in
Jen and Andy's living room. The birth was
attended by two midwives and our friend
Jill. All are happy and healthy. Incidentally,
Sam's first gig was opening for Fugazi while
Jen was eight and a half months pregnant.
The next change came when Phil, drummer
for Submission Hold since 1995, decided
to move on. There was no bad blood or mean
feelings, Phil just felt like focusing on
things other than musicÉ he even
sold his drums! Good luck Phil, we miss
you indeed.
Now we faced the daunting task of finding
a replacement for Phil. Could it be done?
Apparently so, because within a week we
had a new drummer named Kenton. Kenton,
a drummer in the burgeoning, young jazz
improv scene here in Vancouver, has insinuated
himself nicely into our lives as well as
the band. Where we go with Kenton should
prove to be an interesting next chapter
in the life of the band.
All of the changes kind of put us on hold
for a while and a few recording projects
got put on the back burner, but we're going
full steam ahead once again. We will record
some new material in July, after Sam's and
Kenton's first Submission Hold tour. Hopefully
that split with Kochise will see the light
of day sometime soon.
As mentioned above we will tour this coming
June down south to San Diego and back through
uncharted territory for us, it will be our
first time through Idaho and Montana. Our
friends, Antiproduct will be with us once
again for the tour as well as some select
dates with the Californian band Please Inform
the Captain This is a Hijack. After a short
spell back home we will leave for Europe
in August. This will be our third Euro tour
and will focus mostly on Scandinavia. There
is some loose talk of Australia next spring.
Joining the tours for a couple of gigs as
well as playing some recent local shows,
is The Din. The Din is the new free-improv
project made of subholders Stephe, Andy,
and Kenton along with a fourth revolving
member. The Din had it's debut when long-time
Sub Hold collaborator Kirsten Elliot was
in town from the U.K. and the two groups
played a farewell to a long standing communal
home on E. 2nd Ave. Kirsten will also be
joining us for our Scandinavian tour. The
Din goes Nordic? Who knowsÉ
So, all's well and back on track for Submission
Hold. Except for Jen's broken arm that is.
Yes, Jen fell down and broke her arm (while
holding little Sam, yikes!! Don't worry.
Sam got no injuries, just a rude awakening.)
Apparently she should be good as new by
the time we hit the road. We're looking
forward to seeing all our old friends and
making new ones this summer, so come and
say hi, meet Sam, shake yer booty and smash
the old social order!
Regards, the Hold Jen, Andy, Stephe, Kenton
& Sam
P.S.Thanks to Morag for the website help!
